Sustainable species management

The Berne Convention, or the Convention on the Conservation of the European Wildlife and Natural Habitats is an international convention that contains provisions on the protection of natural habitats (biotopes) and specific species of flora and fauna. The Convention protects wildlife, i.e. contains a list of animals and plants under conservation. At present, there are 505 species of wild animals and plants on the list of rare and endangered species on the territory of the Republic of Belarus.Annexes and Resolutions on the Convention contain a list of protected species and biotopes, as well as mechanisms of conservation, including the need to create protected areas, preparation of management plans, arranging of monitoring and active conservation, etc. The participation of public activists and organisations is very important for the operation of the mechanism of species conservation in the whole country. Without the participation of local residents and public activists, it’s impossible to implement the conservation of endangered species in their habitats and identify threats to their existence in due time, to take immediate action for their protection.

Objective to prevent the destruction of rare species of animals and plants of Belarus and their habitats, to contribute to the preparation of management plans, passports and conservation pledge agreements on certain species and handing them over under the land users’ protection, to implement wildlife monitoring.
